Week 1 | Two Cultures | Blog Assignment
My entire life I have never thought of the duality that science and art have together. Having grown up in South Pomona and other cities much like it, I never really had the opportunity to explore my passions in the art. I grew up in primarily underserved communities with education budgets that did not extend into the arts. I am excited to take this course, for it to expand my knowledge int he arts and its relation and connection to science. When I graduate I hope to teach elementary school education and provide students who are growing up much like I did an education they deserve. As an elementary school teacher I will be tasked in teaching both science and art to K-5 students. I hope this course can provide some much needed insight on these two subjects.
Cartoon on the Education Gap
According to professor Vesna in the video lectures this week, there is a connection that exists between both cultures of art and science but that within modern day society we have begun to divide them more and more. Vesna states that, "Physicist Werner Heisenberg, believed that artists' creativity arose out of the interplay between the spirit of the time and the individual" (pg. 122). This being that most art that is created is inspired by science and that there is indeed a strong connection between these two cultures but in the 21st century we have begun to separate the two more and more.
Cross Between Art & Science

Snow believed that there was in fact this strong connection between science and art, the way that they both worked together and inspired each other. The parallels of these two cultures working together in many ways is in-fact seen in varying different situations in my immediate world. The cross between north and south campus at UCLA.

These two divisions are counterintuitive because in order to fully grow and understand a topic more we need to expand our thoughts. Therefore, in order to understand science better we need to embrace art and vice versa. On UCLA we like to divide both sides of campus between the humanities and the hard sciences but as a sociology major I have required scientific data, and statistical analysis. I believe that it is fundamentally important for all of us to work on including more art and science into our daily lives and educational growth because only together can we truly grow.

  1. I think it's great that as you're aspiring to become an elementary school teacher, you're already becoming aware of the concept of the two cultures and how they build upon each other. Looking back to elementary school, there was never a time where I strongly favored a subject, learning all of my subjects under the same teacher, so the person teaching never affected my thoughts on a subject. A teacher that incorporates all the different "cultures" in an educational curriculum really influences student learning in the future, and in ways, drawing from multiple fields can help students utilize what they already know from multiple subject areas to learn new material in one specific one. I hope you continue to draw these connections and see more of the interactions between the cultures in practice.
