Week 9: Space + Art

Space + Art

"Space is the breath of art" - Frank Lloyd Wright

When I think of space, I think of star trek and this fictional world in which we travel across the galaxy and have space wars. However, the reality we live in is not as exciting as that, but when we start to look at the intricacies of space and the universe in which our planet is in we begin to see the beauty behind it and its strong connection to art, much like everything else.

Like Carl Sagan said in his "Pale Blue Dot" speech, even though the earth is a tiny planet in a universe filled with planets and stars, this tiny planet still holds all the people we've once known, politicians, conquerors, good people, bad people, and everything in between. Space holds everything that is, nature, love, feelings, emotions. When thinking of this I became interested in other examples where we use art to depict the beauty and sometimes terrifying nature within space. Within this blog, we will be exploring these examples where art and space worked together to convey something extraordinary.

According to Haridy, this image is an artists rendition of what a different galaxy across the universe looks like across the universe. It is difficult to take a look at that image and think how beautiful yet terrifying that image is. Images like these leave us not only with the curiosity of what exists in our universe but also the existential realization of how insignificant we are on earth and how compared to everything else we are but a small spec in the history of the galaxy.

At the beginning of this blog, I mentioned star wars, an example of a fictional universe that consists of comic books, movies, and TV shows. These depictions of what space travel could look like in the future and this idea of an intergalactic universe is at its core essence art. Now, not only is the genre itself an artistic reflection of space and the future, but the genre of itself has sparked a plethora of fans and fan art. This I find to be extremely fascinating and interesting how many sci-fi genres will connect very heavily with the fans of the show or movie and will inspire many to be artistic. According to Jensen, many fans of star wars and sci-fi shows will become so closely connected to the show or movie that it leads them to have a personal connection to their art and become extremely attached. I find that to be amazing because I have never been a very artistic minded person but I have always been a huge movie and Tv nerd, and so to see that many people find a meaningful and emotional
connection to their art because of their love for a universe or world, is something that I can understand and appreciate.
